Cederberg Escape 2008 - 3 Day MTB Race

Report from Johan Reyneke, 24-26 Oct 2008
The Route
Riders get to experience 3 different out and back loops, all from one central race village, taking them through the majestic
Cederberg Conservancy. This vast wilderness area, covering almost 172 000 ha, offers a mix of gravel roads, rocky jeep tracks and single tracks, leading past spectacular rock formations and through wonderful fynbos - a must-see area for all nature-lovers.
Daily distances vary from 48km – 85km per day, but don’t be deceived - it includes some challenging riding on rugged terrain with plenty of dual and single track. The race starts at 7 am each morning, allowing for plenty of time to relax and chill in the natural rock pools in the afternoon. The cut-offs times are generous – to also cater for stage riding novices. The Cederberg is renown for its extreme temperatures. All the riders were very pleased to ride with the current World Champ Christof Saucer, and what a pleasure to see him in action!!

Day One 84km

No mercy here, rocky roads, cost Johan a Flat, and falling of the pack, but thats MTB!

Day Two 54km
One's "Medal" at the end of the race is a ROCK with a little silver plate on it....that describe really that one had to eat rock in this race. Johan Said the rocky road, yesterdays flat, and the fact that he could damage his bike so easily (no sponcer to fix) got to him and he said he let all pass and just called it a day halfway, and casually finished the race.

Day three 48km
Today seemed to be a lot better, good legs and he kept up with the fast and furious and looked good all the way!!

The Race were well organised, Meals camp, ablution etc (Cape epic team) and cost R2900 which would be without reach for a lot of riders. I think given the riders etc Johan felt a top ten would be good but... better luck & racing next time..

The Family were not allowed into the camp but had a wonderfull weekend in the beautiful Cederberge

Seweweekspoort MTB Race 2008

The Race started 20 km outside Ladysmith, follow the gravel road (long steady climb) into the Seweweekspoort circle around the dam, through a few cool water streams back towards the start and then follow approx 25 km through farms towards the highschool in town (Ladysmith) to form part of their annual cheese festival.

The weather was perfect for racing cool, for the fast finishers but getting up to 30/32degrees later. Dont let the picture of the start fool you on the narrow dirt road there were rows and rows of cyclists, i think the announcer said 600 al in all, and the figure increase substantially every year. It was good to see our countries top riders taking part, Kevin Evans David George, Vicus Boshoff Petrus Matthyse, Eric just to name a few. Kevin arrived well warmed up a few minutes before the start accompanied by the Coimbra Team, he was greeted by all and congratulated with their newborn..Ruby.

From here onwards Johan reported that the race started at a 100m sprint pace!! and that needless to sat that pace was maintained to the end !!

I think the steady long climb at that pace sorted the top 20 riders quickly into smaller groups. the first to cross the 50 km line was Kevin and David at a very fast pace, the next group of 3 Petrus, Eric and Stephan Straus (2 min) behind the 3rd Bunch of 5, about 5min behind the front.

Johan said the fact that he did not warm up properly "cost" him and it was difficult to keep up.

During the race he recovered, passed a few riders from the 50 km onwards and ended the 80km in a time of 2.54.29. 8th in cat and... 15th overall.

The organisers arranged to hand out the cyclists certificate as soon as one crossed the end line, quite a good idea i think!! We haven't been at the finish to see the results but will update as soon as available..
Results 1st Kevin Evans 2.37 2nd David George 3rd Stefan Straus
4th Petrus Malherbe 2.40 and 5th Erik Kleinhans

Report from Johan Reyneke

Sunday 12 October.
The William Simpson Fiat/aQuellé Apple Blossom MTB Race
Took place outside Grabouw. The various routes had great new single tracks; and shorter non-technical routes for youngsters and young-at-heart. VenuePaul Cluver Estate, Elgin, Grabouw Route Description The 52 km and 26 km routes will be quite different from the 2007 event, starting by following dirt roads through the Nature Reserve where you can see eland and zebra. The 52km and 26 km will veer onto the Oak Valley Estate and be treated to some awesome new non-technical single track. You will return back onto the Paul Cluver farm and wind your way around the estate, in amongst fynbos, trees, apple orchards and vineyards back to the finish at the amphitheatre. On the whole, this is an undulating course, with some excellent flowing single track. The 12 km route is easy and fairly flat.

Johan Took part, did the long route, was very impressed with the new single tracks... BUT !!! unfortunately towards the end one of the marshall's pointed the riders into a wrong direction!! So at the end, the top riders rode longer and some shorter!! i believe very frustrating to all of them... I think at a big event like this, the organisers should try to avoid these incidents..
Johan was listed as 3rd but some of the top riders were not even listed... the new single tracks were very good though...

Well done Christo!!

Engen Dynamic Cycle race 99km

Christo Botha Completed the 99km in a time of 2.40.59 VA cat at an ave speed of 36.9 kmph his position were 112/425 Well Done Christo!! , that is a good time and valuble km's. Let us have your report....

I came 18th in VA. It was a hard race because nobody wants to work and Few of us tried to break away, but they kept coming back, so in last 25km I felt like dark horse because everybody sits behind my wheel, but it was good training for me.

Another Podium!! Well done Johan !!

ESELFONTEIN MTB FESTIVAL 10 - 12 October 2008
...The “Ceres ride” is the most taxing, the most beautiful and the most satisfying mountain bike event on the Western Province fun calendar. I would like to suggest that it would hold its own anywhere in the country...
- Ride Magazine -

MOUNTAINBIKE ROUTES 15, 25, 40 & 70km
This event is held on a specially designed single track mountain bike route that has been continuously altered and bettered for the last 20 years. The event is unique in that it offers mountain bikers the most single track riding, with enough passing sections, out of all events on the S.A MTB calendar. Riders can look forward to some tough climbs, thrilling down hills and awesome views. This is one of the very few true mountain bike events around and should be ridden by all who love mountain biking. The distances are 15km (easy riding for novices), 25km, 40km (for the average rider) and 70 km (tough, technical but very REWARDING)

At the top of my list, sharing the billing with Dirtopia, is what is now called the Eselfontein MTB Festival. This is a classical Classic that runs from October 10 to 12 in Ceres with a format that promises even more than the bounty that it has delivered in the past. The sheer quality and quantity of juicy single-track on Eselfontein farm demands the attention of anyone even half interested in real mountain biking it is, however, the 70kms route on the Saturday that demands respect and awe: 80 percent single-track, it is one tough, but mighty handsome mother. (There are less demanding options 40/25/15). This year there will also be a downhill race on the Sunday.

Johan Reyneke and Munnik Oliver led the race up to the last climbs. Johan had an excellent race and completed the 70 km in a time of 3h31min to be in 2nd position which was 6min behind the talented young Rider Munnik Oliver.

Well done Johan!!

(nice bottle of wine !!)

My experience at the World Deaf Athletics Championships From Tim Stones

I would like to thank you all for your support and encouragement during my preparation for, and competing in the World Championships, which took place in the city of Izmir in Turkey, from 22-29 September. I represented Great Britain in the Marathon.

It was an AMAZING experience, and I learnt so much about other cultures and countries.
What I enjoyed most was the way all the athletes, no matter which country they represented or how they had performed, warmly congratulated each other and encouraged each other to do well.

I have never before experienced such true sportsmanship, and that was by far the highlight for me!

The race itself was completely different to any I'd ever run before. It was very hot, and windy, as we ran partly along the Izmir beachfront. There were km boards after only every 5km (unlike in SA!), with water every 5km (supplied by ourselves). Problems with identifying the correct bottle for each athlete led to me missing a few of my bottles (one is automatically disqualified for taking the wrong bottle), with the result I became dehydrated towards the end of the race. What happened was that they put all the athletes' bottles in one box, not separate for each country, and there was thus confusion as to which bottle belonged to whom. Being a race, I had no time to stop and search (!) ...

Not all the roads were closed, either, with the result that, at the 35km mark, I did not (obviously) hear a car approaching from behind, swerving between marshalls, and narrowly missing running me down! Despite this, I kept my focus, and ultimately, I achieved the goals I had set myself.

I came 7th out of 15 starters, and ran a Deaflympics qualifying time. My Manager has since informed me that I have been selected to represent Great Britain at next year's Deaflympics in Taipei.

Report from Johan Reyneke

Maxiss 3 day MTB event Oudtshoorn 26-28 Sept

Day 1 - 98km

We all started with a lot of energy, had some wind and towards the end rian and cold weather started, my legs didnt last up to the end and i lost 5min and came 8th.

Day 2 - 103km

Look at the picture we started at 7.00am with the ICE on the grass!! Today was better for me, i kept with the front bunch, at halfway of the jeep track a few riders got away but i managed to catch up and finished 2nd.

Day 3 - 96km

This was a tough day! I had to work hard to make up for day one and to maintain the 3rd position, and the same applied to other riders... Erik Kleinhans broke away (he had a big backlog to catch up with) and i ended 5th with a big bunch.

Everyday's results were added and i finished 3rd overall !! I am satisfied with the results and did some good racing...

Results:

1. Petrus Malherbe 10.13.46

2. Vickus Boshoff 10.18.08

3. Johan Reyneke 10.18.58
